RICK SPENCER-WALT SHINES IN FIRST OSS START AT SAUBLE

Posted on: September 8th, 2023

The Ecotek 100 at the Beach was the first start ever in the Ontario Sportsman Series for Hawkestone’s Rick Spencer-Walt, and the late model standout did not disappoint in his #71 Chevrolet for Two Speed Motorsports. Rick, making a guest driver spot for Cory McAllister, has been a long time competitor in the APC Series and multiple tracks across Ontario , joins Amanda Balson as guest drivers for McAllister in 2023. Heading into Sauble, Connor James had a five point lead, over McAllister and Chad McGlynn was in third. The field of entries for Sauble was one of the biggest in quite some time, with fifteen making the trip to the beach to race. Joining the series regulars were Kevin Jackman making his series debut, Shawn McGlynn, Tim Borne and Sauble pole sitter in July, Derek McCullough. Connor James squeaked the lead on lap one before Rick Spencer-Walt took it over and remained there for the remainder of the event. The night was not without a bit of damage, as Michael Hryniuk Jr., Bobby Tolton, Brad Robinson & Brendan Patrick had moments on track which saw them around or with some damage. It was an unfortunate result in the end of multi-time champ Shawn McGlynn, who had a mechanical issue and was unable to finish the race in his #18 Ford. Derek McCullough and Ollie Ferguson rebounded from tough races at Sunset, running strong all night long to finish 3rd and 6th respectively. Ferguson has the honour of being right up with Connor James and Chad McGlynn for the Brimstone Games Hard Charger Award, which is awarded to the driver who advances the most positions throughout the season. As the race approached its end, a caution came out for a hard wreck for the #3 of Bobby Tolton. A dispute on track resulted in the curfew being reached, and unfortunately, the race did not restart. However, it meant Rick Spencer-Walt secures his first career win in his first start, in a dominating fashion. With this win, Cory McAllister secures the points lead heading into the final race at Delaware Speedway on September 15. The race will feature longtime ARCA competitor Amber Balcaen in the #47 Brimstone Games Dodge for Sean Mangin. You can check out the finale at the track or on Rogers TV London. We at the Ontario Sportsman Series want to thank all of our competitors, partners, officials and fans as we head into our final race!
